Cromwell was established alongside the junction of the Clutha and Kawarau Rivers. In recent years a new town centre has been built due to the establishment of Lake Dunstan and the Clyde Dam. The old gold town which once overlooked the turbulent meeting of the two rivers has become a modern lakeside recreational area, with opportunities for lakeside walks, gold panning, boating, fishing and rowing. The town also features an excellent golf course, heated swimming pool and squash facilities.
