The lethal team behind the Pub to Pub Bannockburn Gutbuster
On the 28th November 2015, keen mountain bikers will be gearing up to start the Pub to Pub Gutbuster. Some say the participants in this ‘Tour de la bière’ from the Garston to Bannockburn Hotel are athletes, others think they are deranged. The 75-kilometre race heads over the Hector Mountains, through the Nevis Valley before cranking up to Duffers Saddle and then back down to Bannockburn. To non-riders, the event sounds more like the children’s story “We’re going on a bear hunt and we’re not scared”, with a high point at 1300 metres above sea level and around 25 river crossings along the way.
Odette Bride of Cromwell and the Cromwell Taekwon-Do Club are working hard behind the scenes to help make the Pub to Pub Gutbuster a success and do some fundraising. Bride doesn’t claim to know much about mountain biking. Nor does she actually want to ride over, through and down some of the toughest terrain in New Zealand; however, she does know how to organise volunteers. When asked her opinion of the race she explained, “It is how it sounds, a ‘gutbuster’. By the end of it, they will have earned their complimentary burger at the Bannie!”
It seems fitting that one of Cromwell’s newest clubs is ‘going big’ to support one of the A1 Summer Series largest events. Cromwell Taekwon-Do meets on Tuesday nights at the Cromwell Scout Hall and was started in April 2015 by Laxman Basnet. He has his own black belt and is a registered International Instructor and A Class Referee. Since then the Club has steadily grown and is officially affiliated with the United ITF and Taekwon-Do NZ.
As with most of New Zealand’s mountain bike races, the day wouldn’t happen if it wasn’t for volunteers. Odette and her lethal team will provide administrative support, act as marshals and timekeepers. Other key supporters include Crank Cycles who are providing prizes, the SouthRoads STMS team, Summerlands with their trucks and buses to transport participants to the start of the race and, of course, Reuben and his team at the Bannockburn Hotel.
