Cromwell Summer Series: Evolving for the Future

The Cromwell Summer Series is undergoing an evolution. After many years of successful collaboration, Bill Godsall, the long-standing contractor for three key events in the series, namely The Bannockburn MTB Classic, The Round The Lake Dunstan Challenge and the Lake Dunstan Triathlon, Duathlon & Kayak Race Multisport, made the decision to step down earlier this year.

Despite our efforts, we have been unable to secure a replacement contractor to continue running these events. Given the landscape of multisport and community events has shifted in recent years, with evolving participant expectations, increasing competition, and a growing demand on resources, we’ve had to reassess the viability of running these events at a traditionally peak time of year. Securing sufficient volunteers over the festive season has additionally presented challenges to the logistical complexities of delivering successful outdoor sporting events. As a result we have made the difficult decision to put these events on hold.

We want to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt thanks to Bill Godsall for his unwavering enthusiasm and dedication over the years in running three of the Summer Series’ signature events, and additionally his former involvement in the thirty plus year history of the  Cromwell Half Marathon as a participant, time-keeper and organiser. Needless to say Bill and his family will enjoy their first Christmas holiday season together after many years of hard work, and we believe this break is well-deserved.

Looking ahead, we are pleased to announce that the Cromwell Half Marathon continues to grow as an important and independent event that draws athletes of all ages and abilities. This popular race has experienced a remarkable surge in participation, with its highest numbers since post-COVID recorded in 2024. The event has become a popular fixture on the local and regional race calendar, offering an excellent training opportunity for athletes preparing for other races across the country, whilst showcasing the natural beauty of the surrounding lake & mountainscapes of Cromwell.

We are thrilled to announce that Terry Davis will continue as the lead contractor for this event, with plans underway to elevate the event further in 2025 and beyond. The 2025 Cromwell Half Marathon is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 11th October, with registration details coming soon.

We would like to take this opportunity to extend our deepest gratitude to the incredible sponsors, volunteers, and families who have supported the Cromwell Summer Series over the years. Your contributions have made these events possible and have helped create an unforgettable experience for all involved. We are also thankful to the Cromwell & Districts community for their continued hospitality, welcoming visitors from near and far to enjoy our slice of paradise. The stunning natural landscape serves as a fantastic motivator for those challenging themselves physically, and we are proud to be part of this experience.

The Cromwell & Districts Promotion Group continues to work hard to bring exciting, well-supported events to the region. Stay tuned for more updates on the Cromwell Half Marathon and other upcoming events.
