Winter Magic by Many Hands: Cromwell Lights Up in a Sparkle of Community Spirit

Winter Magic By Many Hands

This year’s Light Up Winter in Cromwell is set to shine even brighter, thanks to the incredible creativity and collaboration of local groups, schools, artists, and volunteers who are bringing the magic to life on Saturday 2nd August.

At the heart of it all is the Cromwell MenzShed, who have been busily crafting a series of charming props to help transform Anderson Park into a glowing winter wonderland. With their skill and community spirit, the MenzShed crew have been building a range of whimsical structures and decorative pieces, which are being painted by local volunteers and artists—including the talented Carter Mitchell. Carter’s artistic touch will bring each creation to life with colour, character and creativity. So watch this space!

“We love getting behind community projects like this,” says Dennis Booth of Cromwell MenzShed. “It’s a great way to put our hands to good use and be part of something that brings the town together. Plus, we’re having a bit of fun with it too!”

Joining the efforts are a number of other community champions. Goldfields School is creating a magical fairy door trail, painting the tiny doors in special finishes and lighting them up for tamariki to discover throughout the evening. Otago Polytechnic will be showcasing a lit-up quad bike and side-by-side ATV, while also setting up a glow-in-the-dark hole-in-one putting challenge with glowing golf balls and turf. And the talented students of Tarras School are designing and painting large glow-in-the-dark plywood creatures, brought to life with vibrant colours and ambient mood lighting.

“It’s been amazing to see how many people have stepped forward to contribute,” says Anthea Lawrence, event organiser. “From the MenzShed to schools, Polytech and individual volunteers—it really is a community-wide effort. Everyone brings their own flair, and together it becomes something truly magical.”

The finished creations will be scattered across the venue—lit, playful, and snap-worthy—adding sparkle, wonder, and warmth to the night’s atmosphere.

In addition to the Light Up Your Hat competition and on-stage parade, roving judges will be wandering the crowds in search of the most dazzling Light Up Winter attire. It’s your chance to shine, with spot prizes up for grabs—so gather your fairy lights, dress to impress, and help light up the night!

Come along, take a stroll, and soak up the glow—Light Up Winter is a celebration of community spirit, creativity, and connection that’s sure to leave you with all the warm fuzzies.
